Attached are readings for the first meeting of the seminar, September 18.

1. The Introduction to the Hadot book Philosophy as a Way of Life, by Arnold Davidson. This offers a good complete overview of Hadot's work in this area.

2. Chapter 3 of the book, consisting of Hadot's essay "Spiritual Excercises." This gives a full exposition of his idea of ancient philosophy as involving or even consisting in "spiritual exercises."

3. Chapter 11 of the book, consisting of a short essay on "Philosophy as a Way of Life."

You should read these in the order just given.
