Approaching Cognitive Science Through Music

Abstract: People tend to think through central questions in cognitive science using domains other than music. Yet music is a pervasive human activity with a rich and complex history of perception-centered theories. This talk outlines some of the ways that thinking about music might inform existing problems in cognitive science and open up new ones. It assesses some of the challenges and benefits of working with subject matter that possesses a long history of humanistic scholarship, and that encompasses a large amount of variability.
