ABSTRACT:  In her famous book, The Second Sex, published in 1949, Simone de Beauvoir begins with a decisive formula: "the mind has no sex". This formula, borrowed from the writings of Poullain de la Barre (1647-1723), including De l'égalité des deux sexes (1676), De l'éducation des dames (1679), and De l'excellence des hommes (1675) has a clear meaning: defending equality is the condition of emancipation.  To understand why this starting point (the mind has no sex) explains that "we are not born women, we become women", we have to understand how there is no immutable essence of a woman but a long history of inferiorisation and domination.
