Abstract: In this talk I will sympathetically reconstruct Rousseau’s claim that social inequalities, and the institutions in which they are embedded, are artificial, or human-made. I will focus on and defend the social ontology implied by this claim and investigate the sense(s) in which social institutions depend for their existence on human agency. Rule-following and valuing  (espousing conceptions of the good) play a central role in this vision of social life.
