ABSTRACT:  Suppose we must choose among different outcomes, in which people fare better or worse.  And suppose different numbers of people, or at least different people, will exist in these outcomes.  How should we choose?  I consider an answer: roughly, that it is wrong to leave the worst-off to suffer a worse fate.  I suggest how it might solve some familiar problems in population ethics.  Then I ask whether we can accept it.
