Friday, October 8th

4:00pm - 6:00pm

Robertson Hall, Bowl 2

Abstract:   Utilitarians believe that we ought to do whatever would maximize the sum of well-being. But it's not obvious that well-being is even the kind of thing that can be summed across individuals. There are sums of masses and of lengths, but not of beauty or of times. Why should we think that there are sums of well-being? In this talk I will consider some possible answers to this question and raise some problems for each of them.
