On the occasion of John Cooper’s retirement from Princeton, the Department of Philosophy and the Program in Classical Philosophy dedicated the 2016 ‘December Colloquium’ to John’s work. It was at that conference that various of John’s current and former Princeton colleagues and students hatched the idea of putting together this collection of papers engaging with themes arising from his work.
Gabriel Richardson Lear’s paper in this volume started life as a contribution to that conference; the other papers are also written especially for this collection (except for two which had previously been published elsewhere).
This special issue of Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy was edited by Hendrik Lorenz, Benjamin Morison, and Alexander Nehamas, under the general editorship of Victor Caston. All the contributors are either current faculty, former faculty, or former grad students, in Princeton’s Program in Classical Philosophy.
