The Department of Philosophy mourns the death of our friend and colleague, John M. Cooper, 1939-2022. John joined the Department in 1981 and took emeritus status in 2016 when he had risen to the rank of Henry Putnam University Professor of Philosophy. He was Chair of the Department from 1984-1992 and, over the course of his time at Princeton, played a huge role in making the Program in Classical Philosophy what it is today.
The Department extends its deepest sympathies to John's wife Marcia, daughters Katherine and Stephanie, and their families.
The University flag over East Pyne will fly at half-staff in his memory August 22 – August 24, 2022.
