Cliff was the Director of Electronic Media at W. W. Norton & Co., a leading independent employee-owned book publisher. His department produced electronic teaching and learning resources for higher education.  He is also the author of "When to Terminate a Charitable Trust," published in Analysis (1995).  

With an interest in the nonprofit sector, Cliff worked for the New York Public Library, Vermont Public Radio, and the Fund for the City of New York. In the early 1990s, he founded the Internet Nonprofit Center, one of the first websites to provide comprehensive information about nonprofit organizations.

Cliff is now an origami teacher and designer. His exhibit, "Locke Unlocked", was on display at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England in 2022. The display used origami sculptures to elucidate six philosophical concepts from Locke's "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding."
